Fit Kitchen: The Tengu

The Tengu has long been seen as somewhat of a wormholer’s dream ship. It was always the ship on which people would attach chunky tanks, while also attaching themselves to the nearest B274 wormhole. Looking at you, Wingspan. Nowadays the Loki tends to perform a little better in most ways, but the Tengu is still a very solid choice for both PvP and PvE content.

As before, here are the subsystems and base stats:

Base Ship Bonuses

Caldari Strategic Cruiser bonuses (per skill level):
5% reduction in module damage from overheating
10% bonus to nanite repair paste repair speed

Role Bonus:
99% reduction in Scan Probe Launcher CPU requirements
Rigs may be removed from this ship without being destroyed
On ship destruction, the pilot will lose one random subsystem skill level

(Pick one of each from the following)

Core Subsystem

  • Extra capacitor regen, neut resistance, and lots of powergrid.
  • Longer targeting, better sensor strength, and lots of CPU.
  • ECM Strength, optimal range, and overheating bonuses. Reduction in overall heat damage.

Defensive Subsystem

  • A lot more shield HP, better overheat of active hardeners.
  • Better shield boosters, better overheating of shield boosters.
  • Can fit a cloak, smaller bonuses to shield boosts.

Offensive Subsystem

  • Missile damage, rate of fire, and velocity bonuses.
  • Hybrid turret damage, massive bonus to optimal range.
  • Can fit command bursts and remote shield reps like an Scimitar but with overheating bonuses.

Propulsion Subsystem

  • Agility and base velocity bonuses.
  • Afterburner velocity bonus, prop mod overheating bonuses.
  • Warp velocity and acceleration bonuses, less cap need for warping, and immune to warp disruption bubbles.

Starting to feel familiar? Well, it should be. Most of the T3 cruisers have very similar subsystems with only a small flavour difference. Fortunately, that can often push a fit wildly in another direction. This becomes very obvious when you use the hybrid subsystem and compare it to the Proteus. The Tengu has only half the damage, no tracking bonus, and double the range, but shifted into optimal rather than falloff. This makes use of a blaster Tengu really kinda “meh” compared to a Blaster Proteus. That range bonus is there purely for railguns and without a tracking bonus you’d bet it’s for being out past 100km.

That said, the Tengu makes a fantastic missile ship and is one of the few ships in EVE Online that works well with heavy missiles. Heavy Assault Missiles, too, have a nice bonus in the range department, reaching about 5km further than the Loki as base. This is particularly potent as it enables kiting while still using the recently-buffed Rage missiles. Here’s a tidy little graph looking at what damage and range looks like with each missile option before we continue.

The Humble Jamgu

Starting with the core subsystem as before, we have the humble Jamgu. Since the rebalance we’ve been able to fit a Tengu for both jam strength and jam range. With an overheating bonus, this means that we can do a very similar job to the Falcon from 60km further away and with interdiction nullification. The jams aren’t quite as strong, but if you are basing your entire tank on being at 140km then the Tengu is a great option. To that end, the first fit below will do a great job as long as you sit aligned out 90% of the time.

The other common way to use any Caldari jamming ship is to fit an armour tank. Doing this will typically reduce your jam strength, but will open up more mid slots to fit the jammers themselves. You’ll get most use out of a fit like this in a heavy armour fleet or if the hostile fleet has long-range anti-support ships such as beam Legions. The fit below is something I feel should work well enough. It sacrifices some buffer for resists by opting for a Damage Control and fixing holes using rigs. I could recommend Trimark rigs and specific resist patching too, but it just depends on how much alpha damage is expected.

Finally, you’ve got a bit of a stranger fit, but one that I really quite like the idea of. It’s a bit of a middle ground between tank, damage, and jams that performs a similar role as your standard jam boat while also offering up to 580 hot DPS at 70km. Definitely more of a small gang option for those times when you only have one or two other damage ships on grid. The tank is a pair of a large ancils which provide just barely enough to either survive drones or give you that burst of shield while you escape to reposition. It has very little buffer and will not survive up close so don’t pretend you can actually facetank. Start shield boosting both ancils and warp.

2021 UPDATE: The Interdiction Nullifier now exists! I’m updating the fits below to take this into account.

Caldari Kiting – Long Range DPS Tengus

Once again we have a surprising number of ways to approach the same problem. In this scenario, we are looking at making the Tengu (a traditionally rather slow cruiser) into some sort of kiting boat. The three ways to do that are by pumping it full of agility and some speed, running with a 100MN and never slowing down, or by being so far away that it just doesn’t matter at all what your tank or speed is.

That final method can be accomplished with the heavy missile fit above or more traditionally with a ‘Slippery Pete’ style fit which you can find, once again, below. The premise is that you warp in at around 170km+ and shoot while aligned out. Filling some of those sensor boosters with ECCM will increase your sensor strength, too. This factors into the equation that determines how hard you are to scan down so load as many as you can. Certainly a niche fit; I’d rather fly a beam Legion.

Moving on to actual prop mods, the 100MN Tengu can be… interesting. It’s a bit of a polarising way of fitting since people flying them in different ways. Some want pure speed to burn in a straight line with RLMLs whereas I’m more of a fan of the lower align time, using the 100MN for damage mitigation or escape. I’ve also gone for buffer because of the fallacy that is an active shield tank. People pour silly amounts of ISK into those and they die anyway once webbed. This fit achieves a good balance of speed, agility, and tank while staying under 500m ISK. You can drop a low for more damage or application, or drop a tank rig for more speed, it’s your choice.

And now we come to my favourite of these three, the 50MN Tengu. The idea behind this one is to focus on agility and damage. The Tengu’s missile range bonus being greater than the Loki makes it very viable to kite with HAMs. This opens up potential for some amazing damage with rage after the buff while still applying decently well with Caldari Navy at 37km. Going further, a defensive web on this fit serves a dual purpose of stopping fast tackle, while allowing you to apply nearly full DPS to them once they get close.

The real star of this show, however, is the 3s align time allowing you to change direction or dip in close to point as often as you like. This is one ship I recommend using Snakes, drugs, or at least cheap implants with to make up for the raw speed issue. One potential variant on this style is to instead drop a little speed for Heavy Missiles and more damage or application and fly it like a Cerberus.

2021 Update: For the Pete fit below, simply swap out the probe launcher for a nulli module if you prefer.

Cloaky PvP, PvE, Logi, and Everything Else

Putting together a final section for this article was somewhat difficult because there really are so many applications for a Tengu, but none of them differ enough to deserve their own 300 words. Take a standard active HAM cloaky Tengu for example. Some tank it through the roof, some use ancils, and some go with an RLML style to destroy tackle. My own take on this is kind of a basic bitch. Bling the shield booster, but don’t fall into the trap of spending double the ISK for 1km more of tackle range and 100 DPS more tank. Use that heat bonus and chug some blue pill.

On the other side of the cloaky equation we have logistics ships. Any kind of prop mod is viable, but I chose to design a solid fit for a shield blops drop. It performs a little differently to the cloaky armour logi ships that I’ve previously covered since it’s nearly cap stable and is relatively tanky for such a ship. The decision to drop some regen in exchange for a shield rig was made to reach 75k EHP which should be plenty. Try to always bring three for the full links suite and watch cap levels. Grab the extra Cap Control Circuit if neuts are more of an issue than damage.

And finally, one of the primary use-cases of a Tengu. This ship can complete most PvE content in the game if you run the numbers and fit accordingly. Many people will thus aim for a C3 wormhole fit or a Guristas 10/10 DED runner. I want to showcase the C3 fit here since I’ve managed to get it under 400m ISK while repping more and doing more DPS than the equivalent C3 Legion. Thus far it is untested, but the theory holds up that it should work as long as you sig tank. Dropping DPS for a Damage Control will help the tank, as will any amount of mid-slot bling. The Missile Guidance Computer can also be dropped for more cap regen if necessary.

Some clarification: You need to sig tank with this C3 runner or you will die. If you sit and burn toward sleepers or if you just stay still then you’re already dead. You should be burning perpendicular to the hostile ships to reduce the incoming damage. Heat when needed and use afterburner heat to tank as well.

You can find my version of a cloaky DED runner here. It isn’t something I would usually fly, but it was a request with some very specific requirements from someone else.
The version I use for black ops hunting looks a little like this for max align while nullified, but I could also suggest running dual XLASB. (From 2021, swap one missile launcher to a nullifier)
And then we have the other 100MN Tengu. This is similar to a version flown by a corp member with snakes.

A note on the C3 Tengu: I’ve tested it in an Outpost Frontier Stronghold. The final wave has 6x web and 814 DPS. By removing the frigates first, keeping transversal up, and with a bit of heat, I was able to complete the site in about 15 minutes. Stick to the easier sites, but there’s some proof that it can just about do “impossible” waves if you fly well!

    • I wish the blaster Tengu was good, it just falls short in so many areas compared to the Proteus or a HAM Tengu, though. You get very similar damage to missiles but with cap reliance and 20km less range. Even the meme fit range bonused blasters are kinda meh.

Do you think if I swapped around the resists it could do a Sansha 10/10

        • Considering that Sansha fire EM damage and the Tengu has base 0% EM resist, do NOT do this. You will die

          • Rift Rift

Alright. Brave Wiki had a tengu fit which could do it & it was considerably weaker than yours. So I *thought* that yours would work even better. I got it to 1k ehp/s tank. I’ll just stick to a rattle for Sansha then.

          • Fitting specifically for it and not using the cloak would probably work. Dropping damage for a Damage Control would also help out a lot. So yeah it can be done, you just can’t afford to simply switch around that one and go.

The best thing for a Sansha site would be a Lokii due to Minmatar resists being amazing. Shield is also generally best, but maybe you could cheese it with the base armour + base Minnie T3 resists 😛

          • Rift Rift

Alright. I’ll look around for a good HAM Loki shield tank for sansha. Thanks

I am now power grid stable with the C3 ratting tengu fit, am i missing something? My power grid management is at lvl 5…

    • thor22334 thor22334

      not*

    • Advanced weapon upgrades 5 is needed. That’s one of the core skills for nearly all ships in the game 🙂

  4. For the C3 fit, can it be fit with an Interdiction Nullifier? I used to multibox 8 Tengus and do C4 sites. It’s great, but getting jumped by WH gangs usually led to losing a Tengu or two, but if I could warp out that wouldn’t be a problem. I’d always fly aligned but even so didn’t always manage to get all out. I thought to maybe fly inside a heavy dictor bubble for extra safety and also to maybe fight back a bit if they do try to jump me not knowing about the nullifiers.

    • I imagine so, if you plan on doing that then I would personally switch to Heavy Missiles and drop the cloaky subsystem. Just be aware that you will lose range, lock speed, tank, and damage. Maybe an alternative is just flying really far apart from one another so that your Tengus can’t be bubbled easily?

  5. Ah, I want to fly inside the moving bubble, I multibox the heavy dictor with 7 Tengus. So when a gang comes i only have to deal with the initial tackle as the rest will be at range. At least that’s the idea. Some of those gangs are well equipped. So, the idea is to warp off and cloak. I’ve had it where they could combat scan me so quick I couldn’t even log off, just jump from safespot to safespot. Having the cloaks and the nullifiers would solve many probs.
I don’t mind a bit less dps, just means the sites take a bit longer, that’s no prob for me. The range is important though as it’s the only way to really tank easily. It’s complicated to multibox reppers and dps.
    Thanks for the response.

    • Just had a look at this and the fit isn’t very good. The only way you can escape is by using the warp core stab and nullified. This will work, but the rest of the fit doesn’t make sense. Why is there a shield booster and why the cap rechargers? What are you trying to tank?

My suggestion would be to run an ancillary shield booster or two (2x Large), fit a 100MN afterburner, and a scram. This will let you burn away from targets while scramming their MWD off. You should then swap the Heavy Missiles to Rapid Lights to kill a Sabre or interceptor more easily.

There is also no reason for you to use Dark Blood cap rechargers here. You are just throwing 66m ISK away by doing that. Swap those to T2 if you must use them.

Just wanted to say thanks for the hamgu ratting fit, I’m lacking on level 5 missile range and application skills so I’ve been using javelins. It’s a bit slow, but gets the job done by orbiting at 35km on the battleships. Maybe I would fare better in a c2 hole for now instead of trying c3s. My DPS is kinda low with 450+ cold, and actual application on the mobs are kinda terrible :V
Been practising on dodging webs and warping out when the webs get too close or I fuck up my transversal tanking.

Any tips on what to orbit on the harder sites?

    • Hmm, I have a few things to say about this then.

It seems like your skills are pretty bad for a Tengu. If I remember correctly you should be getting about 1,000 DPS or so. To that end I advise you either train your subsystems/support skills asap or you switch to a different ship to get a good amount of DPS. You’ll earn more that way.

And regarding stuff to orbit. Simply don’t. The best thing to do is to double click in space to fly perpendicular to the Sleepers. Feel free to get close even though you are webbed because you can use stronger ammo. This will mean you kill them faster while also potentially being under their guns.

If, however, you are really just trying to go for something more AFK that flies away then simply swap your HAMs to Heavy Missiles instead. This will give you a silly amount of range with lower DPS. It’s worth a try.
You could also try the crazy dual tank Loki in my Loki article. It’s not technically the most efficient, but I built it with shield+armour to prove that it can be done and it can be effective despite being weird. It’s hella fun.

  8. Is this all still relevent after changes ?

    • Yes there were no changes to affect the Tengu in particular

  9. Thanks Very good for newbro like me to understand the concepts

The Tengu fit for C3 ratting, doesn’t have ammo or scripts….Is it missing anything else?

    • That seems oddly confrontational.

Adding ammo and scripts to everything takes a lot more time so often I don’t because it’s mostly preference/common sense

Hi, me and my friends are planning to run some sort of 3 man exploration fleet using Tengus. One of us will fit for hacking, while the two others will fit stealth pvp. What kind of Tengu fit would you recommend for stealth ambush pvp? Thanks!

    • There are some cloaky HAM PvP ships on this page that should do the job for you. Cloaky semi bling or something I think I called it.

Note that if you are doing this you will likely want to have some decent tank on the hacking tengu so it doesn’t just instantly die
